This kind of pag-ibig won’t leave you heartbroken. Instead, it will give you a long-term relationship with financial freedom as well as a brighter future.
Before you enter into any relationship, however, you must first go through the “getting-to-know” stage. And this article will tell you all about Pag-IBIG.
If you’re not familiar with the term, you’d probably ask, “What’s this Pag-IBIG for anyway? Why do I need it?” and a lot more.
So, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of this acronym, including its foundations and fundamentals.
Here’s a quick background: On June 11, 1978, the Pag-IBIG Fund was inaugurated as a national savings program for Filipino workers. Fast forward to more than four decades later, the fund persists through the support of corporations and employees residing in the Philippines.
Under the program, all Filipino employees are required to register with the Pag-IBIG Fund to enjoy certain benefits. Today, becoming a member and getting your certified Pag-IBIG number are virtually hassle-free. This is made possible through the newly developed online registration option.
In this article, we are laying out the necessary steps in securing your Pag-IBIG number. But first, it’s better to get familiarized with the basics, especially those who have just become new members.
Table of Contents
The Pag-IBIG acronym stands for Pagtutulungan sa Kinabukasan: Ikaw, Bangko, Industriya at Gobyerno. The “IBIG” part holds the essence of its definition: You (I), the Bank, the Industry, and the Government. These sectors all play a role in this program.
The Pag-IBIG Fund is also known as the Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF), which is a corporation owned and controlled by the government.
As stated on its website, the fund was established for the purpose of being “an answer to the need for a national savings program and an affordable shelter financing for the Filipino worker.”
Right after undergoing a verification process, every registered individual will be entitled to a unique and permanent 12-digit number. This is known as the Pag-IBIG Membership ID (MID) Number. It can be used for a wide range of purposes such as applying for loans, filing benefits claims, requesting an upgrade on membership savings, and using it as a valid ID number.
You may begin your registration process by filling out the Membership Data Form (MDF) or registering online. Signing up is also possible via mobile phone. Get your MID number by calling the Pag-IBIG Hotline (tel. no. 8724-4244). For identity-verification purposes, you will be required to answer a few security questions. After this step, you will now receive your Pag-IBIG number.
You can accomplish your online membership registration via Virtual Pag-IBIG, the fund’s online service facility. After signing up, you can either print your MDF or get a soft copy (this requires the use of your tracking number sent to you through SMS or email). You would no longer need to go to an actual Pag-IBIG office to get a copy.
By becoming a Pag-IBIG member, you gain access to a wide range of benefits specifically divided into three programs. Let’s dive deeper into each category.
The first and most recognized program is the Pag-IBIG Housing Loan. This is what Pag-IBIG is mainly known for. It offers affordable interest rates with a term duration of up to 30 years.
Loan interest rates start at 5.375% for one year and 6.375% for three years minimum. This program is made possible by Pag-IBIG’s partnerships with local real estate developers. It gives financial aid to Filipinos who would like to purchase their own house through a staggered payment approach. This is stretched to the time horizon of their choice.
The Pag-IBIG Fund also allows Filipinos to make short-term loans. This type of loan is classified into two: Calamity Loan and Multi-Purpose Loan.
Last but not least, the Provident Savings program pertains to the employee’s monthly savings (with employer share, if applicable) and total annual dividend earnings. They can claim their savings after a while through the following circumstances:

This pertains to an individual who prefers to pay contributions on their own (voluntary contribution).
This applies to a professional, freelancer, consultant, or small business owner.
A formally employed individual is automatically applied for a Pag-IBIG membership, which is administered by their company. The employer will process the necessary documents and will simply ask for personal information and valid IDs. Pag-IBIG contributions by both the employee and employer are mandated by the state.
This is for a professional who has a government-issued license practicing an expertise.
This applies to a Filipino who is working abroad.

By visiting the Virtual Pag-IBIG page and undergoing the online verification process, you can acquire your Membership Data Form (MDF). You can also get a copy of the application sheet in PDF format. This can be found in the downloadable forms section of the website.
Simply look for the Membership Data Form, click on the PDF icon, and start filling out the form by using PDF software on your device. After submitting your registration online, your digital MDF is now ready for printing or downloading. All these without the need to physically visit a Pag-IBIG branch to secure your application.
